RoRo Shipping Vs. Containerised Shipping
If you’re looking into shipping your car, whether it’s for relocation or just for the summer holidays, you’re probably wondering which is better: ro-ro (roll on roll off) or containerised.
RoRo ships are less expensive than containerised shipments and can be loaded quickly. They also unload more quickly at their destination. However, containers offer various other options to protect your vehicle during travel, such as wooden crates and plastic bubbles. Containerised shipments take longer, but they do come with the added protection that RoRos don’t provide.
Which one should you choose?
RoRo Shipping: What it is and What its Pros and Cons are
RoRo stands for Roll-On/Roll-Off. It is a type of shipping that allows vehicles to load directly onto the cargo ship without using cranes or other equipment. It’s basically like laying your car down flat and then rolling it into the cargo hold of the ship. It’s also called drive-on/drive-off because it doesn’t require loading by cranes or equipment.
The Pros of RoRo Shipping
There are several benefits to choosing RoRo shipping for your vehicle.
The cost of transport is significantly cheaper than containerised shipments. Therefore, shipping by RoRo is not only faster but also more affordable, which makes it the perfect choice for relocation.
This type of shipment is closer to door-to-door service than any other type of transportation. You simply drive your car onto the cargo ship, and it gets shipped directly to its destination.
It’s faster than any other type of transportation because there is no need for cranes or lorries, which lowers transit times and increases speed.
RoRo shipments only require the car to be driven on and off. Other types of transport, such as containerized shipping, need cars to be moved with cranes, which means they take up more space on board, and that’s why they cost more.
The Cons of RoRo Shipping
There are some cons related to RoRo shipping that you need to consider:
RoRo only ships cars and other vehicles (no other type of cargo can be transported). Because there is no loading or unloading equipment, RoRo transport doesn’t allow for the shipment of any kind of cargo.
It’s not as safe as containerised transportation because your car gets loaded and unloaded by a crane; this decreases safety precautions.
RoRo ships are not for everyone. If you have a car with high ground clearance or very low, this may be something to consider before committing. The cargo hold is completely flat and has no distinction between the deck and the walls; therefore, it can’t accommodate vehicles with extremely low heights or ones equipped with roof racks like SUVs.
Containerised Shipping: What it is and What its Pros and Cons are
Containerised shipping has become very popular in recent years because it can handle any number of types of cargo, including vehicles. It’s an enclosed box that gets loaded onto the cargo ship and then opened at its destination to unload your vehicle.
The Pros of Containerised Shipping
There are several benefits to choosing containerised shipment for your car:
Containerised shipping is the safest way to transport your car because no outside factors could affect your vehicle during transit. It’s also safer than RoRo transportation.
Containerised shipping ships cars and other cargo together, so you can carry more than just your vehicle if you need to ship large items like household goods.
Containerised shipping is quicker than RoRo because there is more space onboard and no need for cranes; this lessens transit times and increases speed.
The Cons of Containerised Shipping
There are some cons related to containerised shipping that you need to consider:
Containerised shipments are more expensive than RoRo because they can accommodate cargo other than cars, which increases the overall weight of the shipment and, therefore, the cost. In addition, containerised shipments use cranes for loading and unloading cargo; this makes both of these processes longer.
Containerised shipments can only transport vehicles and cargo that will fit inside the box; this type of shipment doesn’t allow for the transportation of larger vehicles such as motorhomes, SUVs or trucks.
Deciding Between RoRo and Containerised Shipping
Both types of car shipping have their pros and cons, and they both work great if you need to transport your car. But deciding between RoRo and containerised shipping will depend on what type of vehicle you want to ship, how much cargo you need to carry along with it, and how quickly you need the shipment to get there.
If you choose RoRo shipping for your car or any other type of vehicle that doesn’t have high ground clearance and you want to carry extra cargo with your vehicle, then your shipment will be costly, and you will only have the car itself in its transport box.
Containerised shipping lets you ship any type of cargo along with your vehicle, so it’s a more flexible option than RoRo. But if you choose containerised shipping for an SUV or a car with high ground clearance, you don’t have the option of carrying extra cargo because your vehicle won’t fit inside the enclosed box.
